About
Kayoung Kim, Ph.D.
Director of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning and Faculty Learning Communities
Office of Teaching and Learning, University of Denver
Kayoung Kim is a cognitive psychologist who works with faculty on studying their own teaching. At the University of Denver she directs the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) program and Faculty Learning Communities, supporting instructors through each phase of a SoTL project, from a first question about what is happening in a course to sharing the findings publicly.
She built DU's yearlong SoTL Faculty Fellows program, which has grown to 51 fellows and 12 peer mentors across four cohorts, and she organizes the annual SoTL Research Symposium where fellows present their completed projects. This site grew out of that work. IGNITE Your SoTL is the project design guide she wrote for fellows, adapted here so that anyone can work through it at their own pace.
Before joining DU in 2022, she was a faculty member in psychology at Tennessee State University and in psychology and education at the University of Wisconsin-Fond du Lac. Her scholarship focuses on high-impact practices, peer learning, instructional technology, and learning outcomes assessment, with more recent work on trauma-informed teaching, online learning, and how faculty communities can treat failure as a legitimate part of inquiry.
Why this site exists. Many instructors have a teaching question worth studying and no clear path for turning it into a project. The steps here are the same ones used with DU's fellows, offered openly for people at any institution.
